Garry Monk registered his first win in charge of Cambridge as they gave their League One survival hopes a massive boost by beating promotion-chasing Barnsley 2-0 at Oakwell.

Barnsley should have gone ahead inside 11 minutes when Nicky Cadden fired wide from six yards after a low cross was cleared into his path.

Cambridge then took the lead in the 13th minute from an own goal. Mael de Gevigney tried to play the ball back to his goalkeeper but his misdirected pass found the Barnsley net.

Ryan Bennett saw his header controversially disallowed for a foul on the half-hour mark as Cambridge continued to cause problems for the home side.

The Tykes almost equalised when John McAtee met Josh Earl's cross but his shot came back off the far post.

Sullay Kaikai had the chance to score Cambridge's second in the 68th minute but he blazed his effort wide after latching on to James Brophy's ball in behind.

But substitute Gassan Ahadme doubled Cambridge's lead after 72 minutes, planting his header into the far corner from Danny Andrew's free-kick.

    Well I wasn’t expecting that if I’m honest. We got a bit lucky today especially with the first goal (and I think if Barnsley had scored first this would have been a completely different game) but the mess United are in it’s all about the results now. I’m not that fussed about how we got them. Huge result for United but still a lot of work to do yet before we can even think about being safe.

    The super Us where completely out played by a team with good football ers, but, we had 1 chance and scored 2 goals, it's all about the back of the net, feel sorry for Barnsley fans as the possession and attacking attitude deserves more, the super Us had a bit of luck for a change, we need more luck 🙏🙏

    Hope it's not the hope that kills you type of thing, but that's a terrific result.

    Classic case of stats mean nothing in this game. After the Tykes beat us looked like they were nailed on for top two. As a Rams fan all I can say is well played Cambridge along with Carlisle and Stevenage today. Proof that you cannot take anything for granted in this game!

    Unfortunately said it time after time Collins is not good enough at this level and if he had any self respect he should be on the next plane to La la land. Yes I get we haven’t got the same defence like last season but we’ve still got some good players underachieving purely down to the manager.. please resign and please stop all this nonsense in the Chronicle about the recent break being good. ?

    A surprise result to be sure. playoffs pretty certain for Barnsley but this will have given Cambridge a big lift in their relegation fight. Fleetwood and Carlisle look gone - any two from seven after that. IMO.

    One happy U's fan. 2 weeks training helped and GM won. We must make it count by winning Monday. It'll give the team confidence. Hopefully we survive, but we must reassess post season. One swallow doesn't make a summer. But for now I will revel in this win. Makes up for the silly loss vs Cheltenham. Hope now most of who we have left are on the beach and we can get 2 or 3 more wins to stay up.

    Barnsley goal keeper made a massive mistake on his positioning. He was far too near the goal line and not in the right position for the goal. The manager’s impact on the game was poor and unimaginative. This is not the first time we have been in this situation at home and he has no answers. Disappointing.
