Barnsley 1-1 Northampton Town: Tykes edge into the play-offs

Barnsley limped into the League One play-offs after being denied a first home win since February by Louis Appere's late equaliser for Northampton.

Defeats for Blackpool and Lincoln, who could have denied the Tykes a top-six place, ensured that they will face Bolton in the semi-finals.

Herbie Kane struck in the first half at a nervy Oakwell to put the team, under the charge of interim manager Martin Devaney following Neill Collins' sacking on Monday, in charge until deep into added time.

There was a smattering of boos at the full-time whistle after Appere's goal, which ensured Barnsley finished sixth after a sixth consecutive winless home game.

Final League One table

Devaney had promised a front-foot approach after being named as temporary successor to Collins, who paid the price for a run of four defeats in five games, but both sides were toothless for long periods.

Northampton had little at stake after finishing their first season following promotion from League Two in a comfortable mid-table position, and that seemed to favour Barnsley.

After news that both Blackpool and Oxford had scored early goals ratcheted up tension among the home fans, Kane settled the nerves with an 18th minute goal.

He struck the ball sweetly between Lee Burge and his near post after being teed up on the edge of the penalty area by Adam Phillips.

Barnsley went into their shell as results elsewhere started to go their way, but were given a stark reminder of the tenuous nature of their grip on a play-off place as Mitch Pinnock fired just over the bar and Marc Leonard forced a good save from Liam Roberts.

Between those two Northampton efforts, Barnsley spurned a golden chance to seal a win as the high press gave Kane a shooting opportunity but he unselfishly squared for John McAtee, with the delay giving Jon Guthrie chance to get back and block on the line.

Shaun McWilliams went close for the visitors as the game moved into added time, but deep into the extra period, Guthrie flicked on Leonard's free kick and Appere swept the ball home for the equaliser.

How can anyone say we deserve to be in playoffs! We have been atrocious since Xmas , put us out of our misery Bolton please . Get a new chairman, new manager that can actually manage , let’s stop saying “project “ how’s about playing some decent stuff so I don’t feel like I’m spending my hard earned cash in Poundland ! Cmon reds we are better than this !

Looking forward to next season at Sixfields. A number of players will have gained valuable experience with their efforts, let's hope we can make several shrewd signings in the summer, a goal scorer would be nice.

Trust me Bolton you’ve nothing to worry about.. This is one dire Barnsley team give or take the odd player . Poor performance once again, no leader and shocking football to watch. If some of these players think they will be off playing for a championship team next season dream on.. you are simply not good enough ..

You're my pick to win it, I favour Oxford myself as a choice as they've been there or thereabouts all season, I had you to get second in Feb as I felt you were the strongest team out of the 6 challengers, anyway it's in your own hands now so good luck to you and the 3 teams in it with you.

Nice to meet our old mates Barnsley again. I know they’re on a terrible run but not much has changed from Jan. Always a tough game against them so can’t see it being anything else.

The damage done by Collins makes scraping into the playoffs irrelevant - not a hope in hell of winning a leg let alone a playoff final. Bolton much more deserving.

Poor game,Barnsley were on edge throughout the game so the late outcome was predictable.Quality in midfield and up front was poor on both sides,not a good advert for L 1.

13 points since March says you have no chance however as a season ends and the P/O's start who knows what might happen, you're due to hit some form and had you not lost it at the end of Feb my prediction you'd make the auto's would've been correct. As I don't have a dog in this race all I can say is may the best team win.
