Former Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth boss heavily linked with Hibs vacancy

Former Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth manager Michael Appleton is thought to be Hibernian’s prime candidate for their current managerial vacancy according to reports by The Scottish Sun.

The 43-year-old has been out of work since leaving former English Premier League champions Leicester City  in the summer following a restructure of their backroom staff.

Appleton had been working as assistant manager to former Foxes boss Craig Shakespeare at The King Power Stadium and had continued his role under new boss Claude Puel until being replaced by Jacques Bonnevay last summer.

It has now been reported that Appleton has met with representatives of Ladbrokes Premiership club Hibernian to discuss their managerial vacancy and he is thought to be the leading contender for the role.

Hibs have been without a manager since former boss Neil Lennon was suspended and subsequently agreed to leave the Leith club a fortnight ago and they are believed to be keen to appoint his replacement early next week.

Potential candidate Appleton has plenty of experience of managing in the English Football League with the likes of Portsmouth, Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers and Oxford United, where he won almost half of his 173 matches in charge prior to his move to Leicester City to become an assistant manager. He was also a Sky Bet League Two promotion-winner with The Yellows.

Appleton is being tipped to beat former Leeds United and Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbotton to the role at Easter Road.
