Police are investigating widespread disorder by football fans celebrating their team's league victory.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said the disorder occurred on Tuesday night, after Portsmouth FC sealed the League One title with a home win against Barnsley.

Various offences were reported at O'Neill's pub in Albert Road, Southsea.

Police said disorder continued in nearby streets as the crowds dispersed. Damage was also reported at Drift bar.

Footage shared on social media shows promotion celebrations in O'Neill's, with about 300 people believed to have been in the pub at the time.

'Mindless acts of violence'

Reports of a number of offences committed at the premises included theft, criminal damage and racial abuse aimed at a staff member.

Police said a man was assaulted in Palmerston Road.

Ch Insp Paul Markham, district commander for Portsmouth, said: "Portsmouth's win against Barnsley last night was a fantastic moment for the club and for the city, and a moment everyone rightly wanted to celebrate.

"Sadly, a small number of people saw this as an opportunity to commit mindless acts of violence and criminal damage as part of the wider celebrations.

"We will not tolerate the minority who wish to use events such as this one to commit crime."

Pompey's 3-2 win over Barnsley means they will return to the Championship for the first time since 2012 - after a turbulent recent history.

The victory was met with jubilant scenes at Fratton Park, where fans invaded the pitch to celebrate with manager John Mousinho and his team.
